My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Australia | Wednesday, January 9, 2013 | 5 photos
My initiation into the world of photojournalism came from an unlikely source: my Grandfather's toilet. It was there that he kept his subscription of Nat Geo magazines. I would rescue my favourites from their fetid future. Where other girls my age had posters of the Backstreet Boys and Cobain on their walls, I had the backstreets of Bosnia and Attenborough on mine.
I grew up with a profound sense of justice, a love for language (including visual and non-verbal), and a slightly naive need to inform the sheltered and the ignorant about the true adversities faced in this world. I have a degree in journalism, and am now studying photography in Melbourne.
The overload of information and misinformation today has caused a mistrust of news media and a growing apathy towards social problems. The burden of proof on photojournalists has never been more urgent. If given the opportunity, I would relish the chance to witness and absorb a professional's invaluable advice and experience and use it to develop my own style. I believe in the power of the image as a tool for social change and want to make it my legacy to give a unique, informed and engaging voice to the hidden struggles I encounter.
