It's January 30th today and I am making last minute preparations for the trip...stopping by clinic to tie up loose ends and getting funds from the bank. Yesterday I successfully got a new battery for an old swiss army watch, which now works beautifully. I rarely wear a watch, but was inspired to actually know what time it was in Uganda.
We were reading the travel book last night a bit more...in Uganda the hottest months are from December to February, when it can get up to 29 degrees celcius. We checked, and this is 85 degrees F; which seems like a luxury compared to the frigid Midwest temperatures of Wisconsin. I am excited it will be warm enough to not wear socks, though here in California it's been warm and gorgeous. For January this is not a good thing, as a drought is predicted again for California's extensive agricultural centers. But for me, I've loved being barefoot at Ocean Beach.
Uganda's estimated population is 27 million, with Kampala comprising 1.2 million. I'll be working in a few locations there, including Mulago Hospital and ReachOut HIV/AIDS Clinic in Kampala, while staying in a local hostel. I hope you'll join me there by visiting this blog site--this way we can all learn together about the impact of HIV/AIDs in Uganda, the determinants of health, and the efficacy of various prevention and treatment programs. I look forward to sharing with you!
