My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

There are two things that I love in life, one is to travel to new places and meet new people, and the other is to take photographs. These photographs are from my time exploring the city of Jerusalem in Israel while I was abroad doing volunteer work. In a place where the ancient and the modern are piled one top of the other and three religions claim holy ground, the diversity of what to see and what to photograph was great. It can be an overwhelming place, but I tried to capture some of the moments that make this place unique. Whether that be capturing a nun while she was walking the Stations of the Cross, a group of young religious boys playing in the water outside the ruins of the City of David, or an old man selling his wares on the cobbled streets of the old city. Each photograph represents a moment that is unique but also the environment and the architecture that is also unique to that city.
I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts and I have been fortunate to have been able to do a little travel in my life. The fine arts degree has enabled me to look at the world and be more cognisant of the overall picture. I like to appreciate the way the architecture, the colors, the lighting, the sounds, the environment, and the people all coalesce to create a place. Photography allows me to capture those places and moments, distilling some of the elements of my experience so that I can appreciate them always and share them with others. Photographs are like visual stories, and stories are meant to be shared. In sharing the stories of the world with others, it helps to create a more knowledgeable global community.
If chosen this would only be a stepping stone onto which I would continue to go out and find those places and people who have stories to be told. If given this opportunity I would be thrilled to learn and grow with my camera and the fabulous photographer Jason Edwards.
