My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, November 3, 2011 | 5 photos

I have always loved taking photos. I received my first Kodak 35mm camera when I was 8 and haven’t stopped snapping since. There’s just something about it. I love that I’m able to capture that moment in time that will be immortalized in my picture. No one else has ever been, or will ever be, in that exact place at that exact time. I can capture that and savor it. Every time I take a picture, I try to use my surroundings to see the subject in a way no one else has before.

I love the idea that even though people get a limited time on this planet, pictures can show us what things were like in the past. Years from now, a picture that I've taken, lasting much longer than myself, could enrich someone else’s life. I love that even if I’m cursed with an awful disease like Alzheimer’s or dementia, I’ll be able to remember my life by the photos I’ve taken. Which is why I take so many. I don’t want to forget a thing. And if a moment, or a person, or a place is captured in a picture, then it can never be forgotten.

My five photographs are of Australia’s natural brilliance. I've been fortunate enough to spend a semester in Australia, and have been astounded at its beautiful scenery. Ranging from an ancient, mystical rock to a stormy sea, Australia is truly the land of beauty. I hope I was able to capture a little piece of it.

I want to win this scholarship contest so I can learn from the best. Working at National Geographic is a dream of mine, probably a pipe dream. Even only enjoying one week of this life would be a dream come true.
