    Halebidu temple, this temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. The construction of the temple had started in 1121 AD and continued for around 90 years, but never finished completely yet it remains a marvel. Reason of incomplete work is every time the work started it was attacked by rival dynasty. The material used for both temples is soap stone which is soft and easy to carve when taken out from earth and gets harder over prolonged exposure to the atmosphere. The archaeological survey of India has taken up the restoration of the broken pillars, Strewn inscriptions and disfigured idols. These temples are being considered as UNESCO world heritage sites. by: meera Views[724] A kund (stepped well) in Channakeshava Temple - Belur. Since early days, the design of water storage plays an important role in Indian temple architecture. people used to travel on bullock-cart, horse-cart or feet and there were no hotels or motels so temples used to be a place where they took shelter to rest and relax; for their inhabitation there was provision of water inside the temple in the form stepped well or tank (Kund), water in these kunds came either from river or other natural resource. Some kunds were also believed to have holy water in them and taking bath in it could cancel their sins and cure sickness. by: meera Views[1385] A sculpture showing a woman engaged in a dance form. The channakeshava temple is more known for the “SHILABALIKE” (Images of woman carved in stone) all around the temple each one engaged in different activities, These sculptures even have interesting names such “SHUKA BHASHINI”, “DARPAN SUNDAR”. It is said that the people hid the temple from invaders by covering it up completely under sand due to which it is still intact. by: meera Views[943] The interior of the channakeshava temple contains richly carved pillars of various sizes, shapes and designs with no two pillars similar. The pillars even in the dark Today shine like metal. by: meera Views[732] Belur temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna (CHANNAKESHAVA), finest example of Hoysala workmanship. It was built by a king in 1117 AD. It is said that it took 103 years to complete this temple. This temple is famous for its wealth of sculptural details, which no two sculptures are similar. This temple has existed for almost 1000 years and are definitely worth seeing; the detailed carvings are music to eyes. by: meera Views[616]
