My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - My Big Adventure

A place that I remember every time I feel bogged down my routine life. A place that I think of when my freedom is curtailed. A place where my mind and desires aren’t at loggerheads with each other. That place is Goa.
In all likelihood a misadventure will happen with you in Goa, because except for the easy and cheap availability of alcohol nothing is convenient in Goa. But then that’s the charm of it.
Goa means huge distances. The best mode of transportation is through hired jeeps or scooters, which I daresay are in dilapidated conditions. They can be trusted to breakdown in the middle of nowhere, which is what most of Goa looks like. And the petrol pumps can be expected to never have petrol after noon. Though petrol is easily available in small roadside stores in battered plastic bottles, which you will at the first look dismiss as some form of home-brewed alcohol.
Goa stands for fun, adventure and recklessness. A day in Goa doesn’t begin with a glass of water, it begins with beer. To be more precise, King’s Beer, which is a locally brewed beer with a refreshing smoothness to it. Every visitor to Goa has at least once looked at the small pint of King’s beer and wondered how he can smuggle some back with him while the more enterprising types wonder how they can sell it back home.
Breakfast is at one of the beach shacks. Prawns, crabs and lobsters served in king size fashion but for dirt cheap prices. The afternoon is spent lazing around on one of the numerous beautiful beaches in Goa. You lay on one of the beach beds until the evening tide dares to engulf your bed. You stare at the sea blankly and find yourself strangely at peace. A long dinner table lit with candles marks the end of the day on the beach.
Nightfall is a signal in Goa, for life to begin. Nightclubs run all night long and you can find tourists on their bikes in search of the next happening party even at 3 AM. There is one club that stands apart though ,it’s Cabana. It’s a nightclub in the hills. A jittery ride on an open black jeep with the noisiest engine takes you up a hill to the entrance of the club. The club opens to a pool on the first level, on the pool side is a platform that overlooks a beautiful yet mysterious Goa in the night. A staircase upwards from the poolside leads to an open bar. There is yet a higher level to the club, and a dance floor takes the prestige spot there. A floor where you can dance till the break of dawn, because that is when you will be leaving.
Goa touches your soul. Some who visit remain here forever and let the place indulge them.

Beautiful! It's amazing how concisely you have been able to convey the essence and feel about Goa.
I still remember the time when I made my trip and found something strangely magnetic about the place....you've just made a bit more eager to do an encore!
Keep writing....it was a pleasure to read!
