West Highlands Wandering

The West Highlands of Scotland

Last year, I had the great pleasure of traveling to the magnificent West Highlands of Scotland on my inaguaral trip to Europe. While I had dreamed of England my whole life, it was greatly eclipsed by the beauty and wonder of Scotland. We took a long drive to the West Highlands for an extended weekend. Our trip started in Edinburgh and lasted for approximately four hours. It was a stunning trip through the open plains and mountains. As we winded along the twists and turns of the slender picturesque roadway, each turn revealed a new vista, every one more spectacular than the one before. There was every landscape imaginable...from snow-covered mountains to serene, pebble beaches. Driving along the cliff above the coast, the road was a gateway to the ocean. We drove to the western-most point, to a lovely lighthouse, sitting high above the sea. It was a photographer's dream. Our guest cottage was nestled in the woods on a dusty, beach side road. We feasted on smoked salmon, rice crackers, and brie. We drank tea and hot cocoa. The only warmth in the cabin was supplied by an old-fashioned wood-burning fireplace. Our days spent there created a lifetime of memories in a place we will never forget. I cannot wait to return!
