Travel on the edge of possible

Around the globe without a penny in my pocket

UKRAINE | Wednesday, 20 May 2015 | Views [63] | Scholarship Entry

Three years ago I decided to somehow change the way I travelled and to go out of my comfort zone as far as possible. Somehow I came to the conclusion, that only when you put yourself out of the touristic routes, when you meet real citizens, when you get into tough situations and try to deal with them, only then you can really understand the country you are in.

So my first experience was going for a month to Scotland without any money and travel around it hitchhiking. On my way I had to find different jobs (cleaner, carpenter, designer, cook, mover etc.), sleep in my tent wherever it was possible (and sometimes not), find different ways of finding food free of charge and be happy no matter what situation I was in. For that month I covered all the major cities around the country, I visited the Isle of Skye, I met so many people who became my friends, that one life wouldn't be enough.

After this trip I decided to find new format of travelling each year and go for it for a month. So my next trip was hitchhike from Moscow to Miami, having enough money only to buy tickets from Brussels to Los Angeles and from NY back to Kiev. It took me 2 months to cover the distance. During that trip I visited 29 countries, dived deep into their culture, slept in the houses of people who were ready to welcome me. Now I could tell a lot about the way they live, their values, cultural insights etc.

My last trip was going through the USA Bicycle Trail on my bike without any previous training. I just thought that it was possible so I tried it. I drove 3500 km from Washington DC to Denver. I drove through major cities and villages, I met people of all ranks, I heard so many stories that one book wouldn't be enough.

During all my trips I wrote the reviews everyday, made pictures, filmed movies. Since they are in Ukrainian I can't provide you with an example of some chapter, but if you'd like I can translate some for you. At the moment I'm writing a book about my travel experience which is gonna be published next year.

My next trip is called "Around Iceland on foot". I'll walk across the country using my feet only. I hope to see as much beauty as a human's eye can possibly catch and to feel its character so I could deliver it to my followers.
