My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am currently a junior, studying photography at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, MI. My first camera was a cheap disposable neon transparent camera. It was a Christmas present. I was 12 and had recently moved in with my grandparents in Michigan. Ever since then, I have worked to make photography my profession. When I first began, my first instinct was to document everything around me; the people, places and tiny idiosyncrasies that I felt were important. My family and friends were first and foremost my subjects.
Although, going to school has forced me to think more conceptually about the fine art aspects of photography, I still hold true to my documentative nature.
Travel has always been an important part of my life. My mother saw to it that I had the opportunity to visit every crevice and corner of the United States and more. Every trip we ever took, my camera was right there.
This scholarship is an unimaginable dream and a rare opportunity for me as a photographer. Although I have the ability to travel within my meager means, I still would never dream of myself in another continent, let alone another country. It would be a rare honor to be in the presence of an established photojournalist like Jason Edwards. Sometimes, it can be disheartening to be in such a competitive profession, like photography, and have the ability to excel. This scholarship would give me the reassurance that it is possible.
