Sheltering Hope

Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

WORLDWIDE | Thursday, 16 June 2011 | Views [209] | Scholarship Entry

I believe I am inspired around cultural differences because of my own unique heritage. As the fifth child of eleven children born to a Mexican/American mother and Irish/American father, questions of culture are embedded in me.

I just happened upon this festival in Sumpango and it was amazing and it’s story wants to be told.

Currently my main work is developing my talents. I have a strong ambition to work visually because I understand that language very well. I just got back from a couple weeks in Peru (I went by myself) and I have ideas around photography and education I am working on with hopes of supporting ideas and people I have met on prior journeys.

One of my film making ideas (and perhaps the one I should have used here) is to help local people promote their home stays, thereby increasing tourism. This came to me when I was in Bolivia last year and spent time with three sisters living self sufficiently on the shore of Lake Titicaca. They are looking for guests to share their lives with in exchange for some cash because they live completely outside any cash economy and there are a few things, salt, sugar, toilet paper that they need cash for.

This scholarship is the opportunity of a lifetime.
