When I read the words “local encounter” I instantly thought
of the Hudson River. I reflected on all that the river has meant to me, and
wondered how I could convey this in a film, which is a difficult task because
the river cannot speak for itself. But the river’s beauty and power can be seen
through visuals, so I decided to aim my camera towards it’s flowing waters, and
to be its voice in a narrative voice over. I’ve made documentaries before, but
all of them had interview segments, and none of them involved a subject so
close to home. I got into Emerson
College’s film program with a documentary for the Seven Fund’s Cinema
Prosperite competition, profiling a socially responsible entrepreneur.
Recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of working for National Geographic or
some similar organization, as it would allow for lots of travel, filmmaking,
and the natural world, which are all big interests/hobbies of mine. I feel that
films should be able to entertain while also leaving an impact in the viewer,
films have the power to change peoples’ views; I want to learn how to use this
power to instigate changes for a better world.
