A 'place' I have visited

My friend Alistair and I were working together in Brighton when a sudden flurry of snow started falling down upon Brighton. On our lunch break we cut out of the office and headed to the beach. Once there, in a spontaneous moment, Alistair started running wildly towards the ocean, his arms aloft and waving in the excitement of the moment as the West Pier loomed in the background like an ominous shadow.

For many years of my life I had ridden over this bridge going between Brighton and London. This picture was taken the very first time I had ever seen it from the ground, where my friend Oli and I climbed onto it, and gazed straight down to what seemed like a near infinite passage. This is the Balcombe Viaduct on the outskirts of Haywards Heath, in the United Kingdom, in one of those still functioning and wonderful examples of British engineering.

A piece of public art, cutting out of the blanket of snow like a whale fin, made me drawn to this piece as an object of intrigue within a landscape. It was its darkness, its contrast set against the whiteness of the landscape that drew me to take this picture.
