First of all, I'm not 18. I'm actually 17 as of last June. If that is a significant issue - I understand - but I thought I'd fill in this application because being a photojournalist for National Geographics has always been one of my crazy and possibly unrealistic dreams that I strive towards to keep me working at my best. I have an interest in ancient history, zoology and culture.
These photos included are some of my best work and were taken in July while I was on a mission trip in Cambodia. I'm obviously not a professional photographer - but I hope that these selected images portray a sense of a hurting nation. If you're familiar with the story of the Khmer rouge you will understand the severity of the struggles this nation has faced. The majority of my time was spent with the children in tiny villages on the outskirts of Kampong Thom. Here, these little ones live in such devastating poverty and yet they were the most selfless and cheerful people I have ever met. They were content with life's simple blessings. Although I merely photographed some of these little children from these tiny communities, I believe that they are reflections of us as human beings. We have all shared some sort of hardship and some sort of pain. Over the centuries of our existence this earth has witnessed famines, wars, destruction and poverty - yet we as people are still able to see the beauty and happiness behind something as simple as a child at play.
As you can tell I am very passionate about photography. Ever since I could see a picture I have been in awe of photographers such as Steve Parish and his gorgeous images of various Australian wildlife. I strongly believe that obtaining this scholarship will enhance my photography skills. This scholarship involves everything I am passionate about: animals, culture, travel and photography.
