Those who has been to Georgia and visited the wine region of Kakheti, surely find Sighnaghi extremely charming city. We’ve also heard about it. So during our hitch-hike trip to Georgia we wanted to reach it. But we totally didn’t expect events that happened during the way.
Once we tried to get there we were put down in a small village about 8 km from Sighnaghi. It was about 10 p.m. and there were no more cars passing. The village looks like there were no cars at all. But the evening was warm so we didn’t worry about the distance to walk. We expected to arrive in Sighnaghi at midnight to find a piecefull place to sleep and started to enjoy more Georgia the next day. But Georgia decided to meet us earlier.
When the streetlights finished and we were switching on our headlamps someone appeared on our road out of nowhere calling „Guest house!”. Oh, yes please!
We were confused but decided to follow the little boy who took us to his family house. We noticed that there is no guest house there. They just wanted to welcome us.
The mother of the boy filled the whole table with food: self-made bread and jam, tomatoes from the local market and finally the evening star: fried bananas with chocolate. We’re so excited about eating them that imagine our faces when we noticed that it is not our dreamed dish but traditional fried eggplants with nuts. With great support from the whole family we manage to ate them all, but the taste was so weird that I had to fight with myself for every little bite.
Actually, it is not like I advice you to be aware of food in Georgia. Georgian cusine is just delicious with e.g. its traditional dumplings (khinkali). What is more, many people visiting Georgia highly recomend even those eggplants. But unfortunatelly, we were not that lucky to try the good ones. Anyway, be brave! In the worst case you will have to act like a hamster and store the dish in your cheeks.
Expect this funny accident it was amazing adventure to meet the family. This was worth seeing how their life realy looks like. There was no internet connection, no bathroom in their house. Nevertheless we exchanged our mail adresses hoping that one day there will be a possibility to make contact.
Those events in Georgia are not about being lucky – it is all about being open and trustful. Because the very best of Georgia are people, who live there. And the best of our edventure is, that if you go to Georgia, it is highly possible that you will experience the same. And I wish you so!
