My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Sudan | Monday, December 31, 2012 | 5 photos
From Ugandan child soldiers (http://bit.ly/12S1rSA) to Rwandan gorillas – my love of photography saw me finance trips to learn about foreign cultures and wildlife. I use photos to tell a story and educate people about places outside of the media’s spotlight.
But as a fledgling photojournalist it’s hard to start in this competitive field and, as a self-taught photographer, I’ve much to learn. This scholarship is a rare opportunity to work with National Geographic’s Jason Edwards. This one-on-one mentorship is a chance to hone my technical skills, to build connections and a portfolio. My love of travel has given me the opportunity to immerse in the cultures of countries like Zanzibar and Morocco. My itchy feet explain why I’d love the opportunity to go to Oman - to show there’s more to the country than oil.
This is a new career for me after 10 years in IT. The decision to change careers wasn’t for the money. Photography lets me marry my IT experience with my love for travel and storytelling, and push the boundaries of a traditional medium. When I was in a refugee camp this year, I wanted to immerse people in the scene - so I produced interactive panoramas (http://bit.ly/VkPe32).
