Postcards from Utila

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Despite banning shark fishing in 2010, Hondurans and Utilians still actively catch sharks – this photograph is of a baby shark retrieved from its’ slaughtered mother in Jan 2011. Because of the high demand and price for shark fins internationally, Utilian fishermen often turn to illegal and inhumane ways of obtaining income, further demonstrating the role of the ‘first’ world in the perpetuation of economic inequalities. Sadly, the devastating environmental consequences globally appear irrelevant.
