My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

I chose my birthplace and current place of residence of Queens, NY. I focused on Queens blvd because it represented the "spine" of Queens from which my community stems off from and grows. This transportation wave flows and carries first and second generation New Yorkers via subway, bus, taxi, cars and bicycles. My fascination with Queens blvd is this mix of transportation. There are signs posted near the walk signals advising, "A pedestrian was killed crossing here" with a faded, "cross with care." That sign is a good representation of the way I see Queens blvd. Cars, bicycles, buses, trains and people all mingle in harmony while forgetting how dangerous this strip of road is. I find Queens blvd both beautiful and frightening.

I bought my first DSLR camera 2 years ago. Ever since, I have been passionate about photography. In my journey I keep learning and seeing photography in new ways. I first was focused on composition, then depth of field, then lighting, then emotion and now story. Since I am self taught, my lessons may not have been in the correct order but I now understand that all of the factors matter in a great photo. I have yet to take great photos but I am pushing myself to get there. If I were given the chance to go on a travel shoot with Jason Edwards, I would soak in as much as I could, ask many questions and have fun while learning. Thank you for this competition.
