My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

INDIA | Tuesday, 17 April 2012 | Views [517] | Scholarship Entry

Every culture, since human evolution, has been associated with distinguished activities like pyramids, sports, wars et cetera. The thing which I'd love to emphasie is their relation with the food they eat. A race or population of a region always differ in the type of food they choose to cook and eat.

I've been to different parts of Indian and being a food lover, I love to taste their local food. To illustrate my expoerience, when I was travelling in Rajasthan for 10 days, the food provided to us was more spicy and more different than its neighbouring states. I inquired chefs about this diference, they explained how this specific food and taste has evolved with time. Special food items were cooked with high level of proficiency for their kings and rich and influencial people. But with passage of time this cooking culture was established more in native people and gave them a distinctive identity.

In India, different states has different culture and different cooking habits, for instance, people in southern states use coconut oil for cooking and in northern states mustard oil has been used. Hence, it changes the flavor of food dramatically and reflectes their culture through food. While living in Australia, or travelling through Thailand or Malaysia, I can now recognise their differnce in food habits. This difference can never be detached from a culture. To conclude, while travelling a nation, just follow their distinguished habits for food and you can easily understand their culture.
