The society also has a school that now provides an education to over 300 children living nearby. Here, Rupa, one of the veteran teachers shows her student how to count using wooden blocks.

Shabitri, 36, will spend a few hours stitching an elaborate pattern on to cloth that will become a bag. One bag sells for Rs.500 ($8) and the steady flow of income helps Shabitri provide for her children who go to the Dakshini Prayash School.

At lunchtime, the students head off and their empty classrooms offer views of Madurdaha, a settlement on the eastern fringes of Calcutta. The concrete buildings of the city (seen in the distance) portray the rapid urbanisation that drove the residents of the village to the edge of poverty.
