During my first American college spring break I was afforded the opportunity to retreat from the scorching heat and unexpected dust storms of Mesa, Arizona to Miami, Florida. For that one week in March, I felt pure bliss for the first time in eight months. There is just something magical about being near the ocean and being surrounded by art. Regardless of the fact that I had picked up a few extra pounds since my arrival in America and how self-conscious I felt when I witnessed how physically fit and toned most people are in Miami, I felt so liberated and striking. As I painted South Beach, Wynwood, Midtown and Downtown Miami red I kept thinking of the game Grand Theft Auto Miami which I used to play on PlayStation with my brother a few years ago. Random I know but the mind has strange ways of bring out old dusty memories that serve as a reference (whether useful or not) to your current life experience. I assure you though, I didn’t witness any grand theft autos or anything closely related. South beach is genuinely the epitome of a sultry sandy tropical beach. The sand felt so incredible between my toes and the connection I once had with Atlantic Ocean was restored once again. Suddenly Cape Town was becoming my second favourite city on the coast. Walking around South Beach or eating at a restaurant almost bare is not uncommon in Miami for both locals and tourists, it is almost as if they celebrate the sensuality of their bodies. It’s no wonder there is such a distinct artistic culture, there is such a laidback and progressive vibe. My most cherished experience is my tour of Wynwood Walls, the greatest street art ever seen in one place. It has the most astonishing graffiti murals I have ever seen, I was so captivated by this experience that I went back two more times to take in the stupendous creativity. Although I got to see so much more, I’m clearly still holding on to my memories of the Wynwood Walls. They are a definite must see if you have a love for modern art. I was told by my friend that the murals change quite often which is gets me even more enthusiastic and motivated to find a way to visit Miami every few years. If I had a genie in a bottle I would without a doubt ask for another chance to visit Miami, Florida.
