Tasmanian Winter

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Australia | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 3 photos

If I was one to keep a journal, those 3 horrible months of winter would be filled with negativity. There are only so many times you can reflect on the cold, rainy, miserable weather which dominates Tasmania in the winter months.

Don't get me wrong however, I love Tasmania. It's just during the middle of the year one can feel all alone, left in the cold from the rest of society. It’s during this time that a night drinking warm hot chocolate in bed becomes the norm. And when I say night, the last glimpses of the sun are just before 5 in the afternoon.

While I could go on, I would like to let the pictures provide the basis for the story. This is the beauty of photography in that it can provide an insight into someone’s thoughts and perspective, yet ultimately the viewer is left to fill in the gaps.

The place I have chosen to present is Hobart in Tasmania. Exotic? No. Human hardships? Not exactly. But tells a story? I think it does. I hope the photos I have chosen, along with the small introduction, allow the viewer to be intrigued and immersed in this place.

While Tasmania looks great in its advertising campaigns, it is only telling half the story. To really know this place, you have to live through its winter. This is what my photos hope to convey in some small way, offering a window into in to this place. Offering the viewer not the whole view, but a small insight into a world they may never have experienced.

With or without a camera, photography has enabled me to view and perceive the world in a wonderful way. Eventually I hope this passion and enthusiasm allows me to become a professional photographer who not only takes inspiring photos but enjoys the learning and journeys along the way.
