Johnny Cash in Chaing Dao

Somewhere hidden in the Chiang Dao Mountains I had an experience like no other eighteen year old girl. I spent five days attempting to drag myself up some of the steepest mountains I’ve ever conquered. However, I don’t think Ben Nevis much was competition. Our expedition was led by the two most fabulous tour guides who knew the mountains like the back of their hands. Sap, he was an all-round cool dude and self-proclaimed Hugh Hefner of Thailand whereas Mr Dahli was the entertainer of the trek. He spent the majority of the trek swinging from tree to tree pretending to be Baloo from The Jungle Book and shouting Oh My Bhudda!
One night we had finished the torturous trek and set up camp in what can only be described as a three sided shed. I had placed by sleeping bag on the floor and got myself set up to retire for the night. Mr Dahli had appeared to do his nightly anaconda check. ANACONDA?! I immediately grabbed my hammock from my bag and began to hang it from the beams on the roof of the shed. There was no chance I was going to sleep on the floor with a deadly snake about.
As we all clambered into bed we began to hear some sort of country music coming from the distance. As curious teenagers we all leapt out of bed and began our adventure. Of course, here was Sap and Mr Dahli blasting out Johnny Cash into the night sky. Sap was sat looking as cool as ever in his cowboy hat and chewing the same Tabaco he was at dinner time. We all joined them in their tent where we all sat and sang ‘I Walk the Line’. Little did I know this was to become one of the best nights of my life. Mr Dahli pulled out his lyrics book he had made himself.
We spent the entire night singing Johnny Cash’s greatest hits. Who knew between a group of people who found it difficult to communicate through a common language could have such an incredible time. We also found entertainment by throwing rocks at a single candle standing in the field. The daylight started to rise so we decided to try and get a kip in before another day of trekking. As I was sat in a literal ring of fire I realised the simple things in life are the best. I was an eighteen year old girl sat in a bright pink mosquito shirt singing my heart out with Thai Hugh Hefner and Baloo and I didn’t believe my life could get any better. Every single time I hear Johnny Cash I think of Sap and Mr Dahli and how they showed me I could enjoy myself with a stone, a candle and one country CD.
