Maternal health is the gateway to family health. A mother cuddles her child as he anxiously awaits a vaccination. Ensuring mothers are healthy is an efficient way to ensure families are healthy too. In this photo, as with my other photos, it shows a mother and her child at the clinic. It seemed to make sense, that when a mother came to seek treatment, she would bring all her children to be seen too. This would save time and energy and ensured successful follow-ups and continuity of care.

A large part of maternal health is access to reasonable and efficient birth control methods. In an area where mothers of 25 years of age can have broods of 7 youngsters to look after, it couldn't be more important. A important part of maternal health is preventative care. Antenatal visits and follow-up allow women access to essential medicines, such as folic acid, and vaccinations, such as tetanus. Such simple interventions have huge consequences on a mother's health and that of her unborn child.
