My Scholarship entry - Seeing the world through other eyes

Beauty is indefinable, so is happiness and loneliness. We create our own meaning for these words. We see things differently and interpret situations based on our own experiences in life. For people who have been waking and sleeping along the beach lines of Boracay, it’s an ordinary scene for them. They wake up without noticing the beautiful bright sunrise and they end their day ignoring the magnificent sunset that my lenses want to capture. But for me, who lives in the city, I would drive to the airport and fly to this island just to take sojourn to this paradise I call my happy place. I see little kids making sand castles only to get ruined before the end of day. The next day, they will make another. The long beach shore is their playground, the vast sea is their swimming pool, and the whole paradise is their home. I sometimes envy them for owning the place, for not spending anything just to stay there, for having everyday to behold what tourists have to pay for. The echoing laughter of these innocent children is where genuine happiness can be found. And the simplicity of their lives is where contentment lies. I can’t help but talk to them, and somehow frustrated to find out that these innocent children only knows that this place is where they were born, and they are stuck in this place unless they get better education and go to the city and find better jobs. They want to leave their paradise to see the bustling city. Funny we sometimes don’t know what we have and don’t appreciate it. If their parents would only make them realized that what they have is priceless, then, they will learn to love more their paradise. That instead of leaving, they will find ways of nourishing and preserving what they have. We instill values and wisdom in our children. With how we act and talk each day, we teach them what not and what to do without even noticing it. Truly, the world is your oyster. We make the most of what we have.
