My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

When I was a sophomore in high school I realized my obsessive passion for photography when I traveled to Italy on a pilgrimage. With my first camera I set off on my way, falling off multiple curbs and stairs in my clumsy yet dedicated attempt to reproduce the perfect shots. While I was there I fell in love with the architecture, culture, art, and religion. I couldn’t get my fill of it all. Even prior to discovering photography when I would come across a an interesting scene I would set up the picture in my mind. My goal with photography is to be able to capture a place in time exactly the way my eyes see it. From a vivid sunset to rain falling on a lake top, or just the way leaves drift onto the road in the middle of fall. The moments that seem so insignificant to others are the little things in life that make me smile. I want the beauty in things people may consider mundane not only to be seen but appreciated. I love experimenting with angles, shapes, and lighting. Perspective can transform a picture from simply ordinary to something extraordinary and it can be seen in a whole new way. Ever since I discovered photography and my overwhelming passion to travel I knew that working for national geographic would be my dream job. The ability to broaden people’s perspective and knowledge of foreign cultures and distant lands, through my photos, is a captivating idea. Currently, I am in the process of studying business with the hope of opening a coffee shop. I plan to combine my love of coffee and my passion for art to encourage the expression of young people. My philosophy is that some of the most important things in life are creativity, self expression, and the need to find your voice. Photography is mine.
