On a Crest of A Wave . . .

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

New Zealand | Tuesday, September 14, 2010 | 5 photos

Sailing the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand . . . with shouts of ‘man the halyards;’ the creaking of a ship comes alive. We set off on our journey. Today’s going to be a good day! The sores from the ropes on our hands are forgotten as the sea breeze greets the sails and reaches its arms towards the excited sailors.

Islands of green vegetation and rugged rocks roll by. They seem ready for any eager explorer to discover sandy coves or to pay homage to the ancient trees of an age gone by. An island its deserted beach washed with dead wood, the ship moored safely in a sheltered bay. A few herons try their luck in the little waves that sing their song upon the beach. Oyster Catchers watch hungrily from their pedestals on huge rocks that have arrived to this destination from an over-zealous volcano.

Tomorrow brings more adventure – a long deserted copper mine and sandy coves, first footprints in the sand. Finally the sea tells us one more tale for our sailor logs, a story of rain, white horses gallop alongside the hull, a warning maybe for us to remember that here the sea is king. . .

I would like to be considered for this wonderful opportunity to visit the Kingdom of Bhutan. I enjoy travel and like to use my other interests such as writing and photography to highlight stories in culture; architecture and wildlife.

I feel that I have the right attributes for this task – creative, a lust for adventure, an eagerness to visit Bhutan, to experience their culture and to highlight the endangered heron and cranes but most of all I have the drive and the desire to develop my skills as a photographer in the field of travel writing and photography.
