My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Australia | Sunday, September 25, 2011 | 5 photos

I can remember as a child studying Australian poetry. One of the most "iconic" poems in Australia’s history is "My Country" by Dorothea Mackellar.

Some of the lines of this poem stuck in my mind while I was studying it & I was able to put these lines into photos in a recent trip to Central Australia.

I have always had a love of travel & photography. I adore the different forms that it allows you to discover. I love animals, nature & landscape photography so it was great when I found a tour that allowed me to combine these loves.

The trip I went on was a photography tour of Alice Springs, Uluru & their surrounds.

The tour enabled us to take in the gorgeous outback in all its vivid colours & all its rich textures & also allowed us to explore our creativity.

A picture tells a 1000 words & I hope that my photos allow the viewer to go on that journey. Through my pictures I hope that the viewer sees the richness of the outback, the colours, the animals and of course the icons.

I want to win this competition as I would love to be able to train with an experienced photographer & be able to see the way that he captures his 1000 words. I want to learn from someone that shares the passion for photography & someone that isn’t afraid to teach.

So to quote one of the most famous passages from this poem I learnt so long ago:

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!
