This particularly large Ping-Ban-Zhou (Si Mangavang 拜訪號) was built by the Tao of Orchid Island, not for fishing, but as an important gift to the mainland. Although build using all the traditional methods, it exceeds the largest traditional boats designed to seat a maximum of 10 men. This is its maiden voyage and later it will be used to deliver a message of good luck to the rest of Taiwan, but more importantly to remind us of the tenant: "We are all in the same boat and not alone". The Tao have lived and fished on Orchid Island, a 45 sq. km. island about 90 km from mainland Taiwan, for hundreds of years. Their methods of living together and fishing are honed to ensure plenty of fish for future generations as well as capture the spirit of community. It is precisely these messages that they hope to deliver to the rest of Taiwan. Eventually for the whole world.
