National Geographic The hidden highlights of a journey across Europe.

Europe

'Swan Song', shot in St Mark's Square, Venice, Italy. This, to me, is a beautiful but sad image. The ironic nature of what this shot documents prompted it's title, Swan Song. The rising tides in the Italian lagoon are seriously threatening the future of Venice. Yet it is the high tide in this scene that made this shot possible. Ironically the small orchestra on the band stand in this scene had been playing the theme song from the Titanic film but had to stop due to the rising water levels. Never before had I felt such a sense of being in the right place at the right time to adsorb and witness such a memorable scene.
