Irrawaddy Dolphin

The wildlife adventure continues.  In Kratie we took a boat out to see the rare Irrawaddy Dolphin found on the Mekong.  They have pretty snub noses.  We were lucky as it was early morning we saw many.  Also on the Mekong we visited a turtle cnservation project.  The project pays locals to help them locate turtle eggs.  These are then hatched and kept until 2 years old when they have a good chance of survival on release.  Unfortunately many turtles are hunted for food or traditional medicines so it is hoped this project can project them.

It can be hard to view the environmental destruction here - the litter, the logging and seeming indifference to animals.  But this is changing and the locals have learnt the phase eco-tourism.  Its also much easier for us to be eco minded when we are not hungry or poor.  Now locals are helping initiatives to stop logging and poaching.
