HK in Black & White

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Malaysia | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

My name is Leonard and I am a casual photographer from Malaysia.

On my recent visit to Hong Kong, I was drawn into this structured chaos that both intrigued and mystified me to no end. Truly, the place is an amalgamation of an untamed spontaneity and streamlined perfection – a testament to the idea that beauty exist even in a state of pandemonium.

‘HK in Black & White’ is an attempt to capture and document this paradoxical quality of the bustling city.

The series chronicle the juxtaposition of the ultra-modern Wetland Park with its organic surrounding in The New Territories; aging trams (or Ting-tings) slugging amidst dense Central traffic under a tapestry of neon lights; wondrous cityscapes straddling the sea and the sky down to the swarming char chan tengs (tea parlors) where waiters dish out egg tarts and milk tea in quick succession akin to an assembly line.

The scholarship not only presents a learning opportunity under the tutelage of industry experts, it is also a rare chance to experience the landlocked nation of Bhutan. As a beginner in photography, most of my works rely more on instincts than technical skills, I believe the scholarship will benefit me in this aspect of photography.

With the skills acquired on the trip, together with my personal aesthetic, I am confident of doing justice to the stories of Bhutan.
