Achieving Together: A large pile of chopped wood rests against the wire school fence. The wood is collected for use in building fires for the cooking of school meals. Volunteers work together quietly and efficiently to sort the pots for the food distribution while learners wait, and watch eagerly, from their desks.

Taking Stock:
A community volunteer involved in food preparation for the school nutrition programme, wipes a plate with dishwashing detergent. She eagerly smiled and asked me to take her picture but stopped smiling as soon as I raised the camera. The combination of the barbed wire fence and the badge pinned on her dress reminded me of a scene in a military camp, which was in line with the rigidly ordered way she approached her cooking tasks.

Heating Up:
Make-shift outside kitchen facilities are commonplace on school grounds. Large cast iron pots rest on wood fires boiling starchy foods like rice, porridge and samp to fill hungry tummies. The intensity of the heat and the smoke is suffocating but the volunteers work without complaint.
