My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Australia | Friday, January 11, 2013 | flickr photos

For me photography is about telling a story and reaching the heart. A photo should engage someone enough for them to search their heart for the simplest tie to that photo. A photo doesn’t betray as many details as a video, but because of its limited nature, as humans, it is in our being to question the unknown. We search for details which we cannot gather, and it is the mystery of the photo which engages our heart.
Something I like to ask people is “if you could be doing anything with your life right now, what would it be?”. I would be travelling with my camera, documenting the lives of people I meet through images. I love this personal documentary genre of photography. Sometimes, you can look at a portrait and almost know intimate details of their life. But really you are guessing. From the stray details of the photo, you are guessing around the person trying to know them. I would love to be given the opportunity to do this and to learn to execute my philosophy with better technical skills.
Thank you for reading through my personal essay. If given the chance, I will take the opportunity to engage the hearts of the world in my photos.
Warm Regards,
Lawrence Humblet
