My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Thailand | Monday, December 10, 2012 | 4 photos

I take photos because, one day, I want to sit on top of a Jeep with a big ol’ lens in my hands, snapping as a cheetah sniffs around the bullbar, or the sun sets behind skeletons of trees.
I’ve had the African Dream – a tall order for one aspiring photographer in a sea of those more technically skilled. But I compensate with unrelenting desire to learn and be mentored. I spend more hours cramming my head with knowledge than I do socialising or eating or doing “real” work.
Photography betters me. Behind a camera, I’m patient, inventive, and annoyingly determined to get the perfect shot. When snapping wildlife, these qualities dial up a notch. I just get animals – more so than people – and would be all too privileged to give my time for the sake of a NGW cover shot (nudge, nudge).
Travel photography is my vision of the future. Right now, the way isn’t clear; like Dr Jones, I need someone to spill the sand at my feet before I leap into the cavern. I can’t imagine life without learning, but knowledge is nothing without the confidence to saturate an industry with my own work. This scholarship is my tool to forge the two elements together, and bring the African Dream closer to reality.
