My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

Never in my entire life did I feel this agitated about boarding a plane! I was, after all, going on a vacation to the “Island of love & romance”, but heading to Ayia Napa gave this trip a rather confusing taste. I have done this a number of times, but no matter how much I tried I could not shake off this feeling. The trip was only 40 minutes long from Amman, so taking Xanax was out of the question!
“Making new memories” was my determination; a new hotel, new restaurants, new adventures, a new me! My mind was set, although it felt as if I was being carroted down the rabbit’s hole; all the smells and scenery ignited some deep flamboyant memories.
As we were walking down to Nissi bay, my stomach squeaking a symphony of hunger, I spotted this local woman chanting a song in a language exotic to my ears. As soon as our curiosity was noticed, her warm smile lead us inside her tavern, which later on became my life-changing haven. Along the mandatory waiting period for our savoury dishes, all of my aroused senses traced the mouth-watering fumes leading back to the kitchen; we were prepared for a Cypriot gastronomic adventure!
“Why do I see sadness in your eyes? ”She asked. “I am not sad, I swear! My mind is set on having the best time of my life!” I fake smiled. Not wanting to be intrusive she looked straight into my weary eyes, while all my body-language skills crumbled down, and whispered “I read this once and it never deserted my mind: The moment-the now-is like a river, which carries you forward, ever changing and ever moving. You either flow with this now or reject it, but that does not stop the flow; it only determines your experience of it!”
As the sea breeze tickled my face, my feet imbedded in the very same sand, my sight on the very same sunset, I looked by my side and did not find that same person I was with on my honeymoon, instead, it was my sister holding my hand and helping me swim with the flow.
