Tigers, Chaing Mai

THAILAND | Monday, 2 March 2009 | Views [335] | Comments [1]

Dave and I went to a Tiger 'Sanctuary' today.

When we first got there I felt terrible and honestly felt it was the
worst $10 I've spent in all of Thailand, to be honest. - But once we
were in with the tigers and petting them and taking photos it felt
more worth it - which is still kind of awful...

We got there and basically different sized tigers are in different
areas, and you choose a size - small, medium, or large, and you pay to
go into that area and look for 15 minutes. The small cats were too
much money, so we chose large.

While we waited for our groups turn we got to walk around the general
area and this is where I felt horrible - Giant beautiful tigers in
small - very small - cages with cement floors and nothing else, all
they could do was sleep and pace back and forth. I think these were
just cages for 'breaks' though, I don't think they always stay in the
cages as there are large fenced off areas with many tigers in them -
with some grass and trees.

When we got to go inside with the tigers it was in the fenced off
grassy area, where 3 large tigers slept. I had heard earlier from a
guy we met that the tigers are probably drugged up - and from what we
experienced, I wouldn't doubt that. They basically just slept while we
pet them and took photos, occasionally they would roll over, stretch
or open their eyes. But, it was still a neat experience, to be right
beside, and petting such large, massive cats. We were told never to
approach them from the front, only from behind, and never to pet their
face or front paws, but it was safe to pet everything else. So we
hugged them and rubbed their bellies and took our photos. The photos
made paying for it worth it, but I still feel kind of guilty for
letting people cash in on such a boring lifestyle for these amazing
creatures...

I will post photos tomorrow morning (and that would be evening for
most of my readers,) stay tuned =)

Landon, I was blown away by the pictures I saw on David's facebook. Kind of puts it in a different perspective after reading your blog. It is a shame what people do for money after all, isn't it? Still, it's impossible to not be impressed with these beautiful creatures and they certainly look like they are well care for. Looking forward to seeing your pictures soon. All the best, xoxo.
