I had been in many beautiful cities and countries around the world , in all of them I had enjoyed special moments and keep great memories from these journeys, but La Havana and Cuba are certainly special and stands appart from every other place because of its unique circumstances that made it a place that has a blend of history , great nature , charming people, and unbelievable surrealism.
I had been in La Havana 5 times the First time I went there was 18 years ago in 1997, I had heard a lot about about Cuba and wanted to experience it first hand, so I took a my suitcase and went to the island , I stayed at " Las Villas Panamericanas" that were used to host the athletes that participated in the Cuban Panamerican games and now are used like an hotel , these villages are right between La Habana and "Playas del Este" the beautiful caribbean beaches were the tourists that go to La Havana enjoy , well the first thing that caught my attention, was the people , cuban people may be the friendliest people in the entire world and they have a special lure to become your friend , I may add that also they want to sell you any kind of things , from a bottle of rum a cigar or even a quick hookup with a beautiful cuban woman, of course I didn´t buy anything and better went right to the Museo de los Capitanes, the museum in Old Havana that has a collection of the cuban colonial times when spaniards ruled the island you may find uniforms used by the soldiers from the 16th to 19th centuries, swords, flags ,rifles and any kind of objects used during the colonial period, this is a huge museum that need about 5 hours to visit and is one of the 2 bigger museums in the city , the other one is the "Museo de la Revolución" , the Revolution´s Museum maybe even bigger than the Captain´s and has everything related to the Cuban Revolution, even the boat "Granma" where Fidel Castro and the Che Guevara arrived to Cuba from Mexico and started the upheaval.
La Havana is in many ways a city frozen in time, must of the cars are from the 50´s and there are also a lot of old russian lada cars that I doubt you will find anywhere , the Havana Hilton where movie stars in the 40´s and 50´s used to stay, is now the Havana Libre and the beautiful district of Vedado is full with cafes and clubs for a dancing night of salsa.
La Bodeguita de el Medio y La Floridita are worth a mention here cause they were the favorite bars of american writer Ernest Hemingway to sip his daiquiris and mojitos.
