Her cheeks had traces of tears and I looked up her eyes when they met mind, reminding me of the night that changed my perspectives about life.
Activators where chanting war cries, delaying time to say ''goodbye''
She came close and wrapped me with with her arms and I felt her warm breath on my ear, as she whispered ''Keep your own light brighter than the rest.''
It was overwhelming that I asked my self, where did my life get here, where did it all start?
Alpha Conference Centre is located at Magaliesburg, North West Province in South Africa. Which is at the heart of a beautiful region of mountains and the tranquility it possess is divine.
It was night time and we sat on the grass gazing at stars when we decided to bond and talk since we have all just met.
''If people are as many as the stars, how come they will never work together at fixing things'' Rusnath who wa from Tzaneen in Limpopo.
''I have learned that people like to see others suffering that's why'' Tshidi who was from Witbank in Mpumalanga said
''Why is that?'' I asked
She explained about her experiences as a homosexual woman, how the community have insulted her and made her feel like she didn't belong.
She said, ''All I want is to walk down the street and see people smile, I am not a rapist or murderer''
I felt my heart sink, when I looked at her eyes when she said that.
''In my community, we have poverty as a problem. People go as far as murdering little boys, removing their private parts because a traditional doctor told them they'll be rich if they bring the private parts to him'' Rusnath said ''It's twisted, because some people work hard to pay their bills and while others believe in human sacrifice.''
For a moment I felt grateful that I don't live in the Limpopo province.
''That's not good'' Tshidi looked at Rusnath ''at least if you are homosexual you can act like you not to avoid the hate, now that one is a serious challenge'' Tshidi added
''I've never believed hiding who you are because of judgments from the society'' I said
''Ayanda, I believe in being safe. Hate crimes against homosexuals are rising''
''I wish I'd be at least a glimpse of light for other people to see if stars aren't there'' I said
''Yeah well me too'' Tshidi said
''It's funny how you can feel comfortable with people from far away but your own community'' Rusnath said.
What was suppose to be a 30 minutes bonding session made me believe there's a lot that needed to be done in my country. Yet I was willing to partake.
