My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Ethiopia | Sunday, January 13, 2013 | 5 photos

Throughout my travels I have constantly been struck by the kindness of strangers and the welcomes I have been shown were at times overwhelming. I have been fortunate enough to meet a number of interesting characters. The time spent drinking tea, chatting, and watching them work offered me a rare glimpse into their lives. This is something I try to capture in my photographs.

One lady I spoke to on a trip to India put it quite succinctly. She said, "You and I come from different worlds. You understand little of my life and I understand little of yours. By watching me work today I hope you have come to know some of my world. When people see your pictures, they will also learn." I hope this is the case.

To have the opportunity to travel and be the teller of other peoples stories is an honour that I sometimes wonder if I deserve. There is still so much of both photography and the world that I am yet to understand. I am an enthusiatic amatuer, so very keen to take things to the next level. I've had a couple of images published which has only fuelled the fire.

My work as an English teacher has taught me the value of learning, and I'm a more than willing student!
