My Scholarship entry - Seeing the world through other eyes

Colorful women around. Inquisitive men watching me like TV. Cute and dirty children begging for food and money. The smells of exhaust fumes, pee and incense mixed together. Horns beeping frantically. The whole family riding one bike. The sun shining much brighter making my eyes slit. No maste, I am in India.
If you want to have an express course in conscious choosing the beauty of life and joy, three days in Delhi will be enough. You’ll learn how to do it. Just make sure you don’t stay in the hotel room all the time. On my first day I saw a street boy in shabby clothes washing something in a big metal basin full of dirty soap water with velvet red rose petals swinging in its waves. Don’t know how I managed not to scream when I saw a big rat getting out from under the basin all of a sudden. There are many-many homeless dogs, really big ones. They are walking everywhere and lying everywhere, sometimes barking but they are incredibly friendly. For the first time in my life I saw them kissing. Two big light orange dogs were staying in front of each other with their noses joined gently together. Then it was when I lost the fear of dogs. And have you ever seen a poop and a flower lying together? I have. At first you don’t believe your eyes, then you don’t want to believe you eyes, then you finally believe and even find some message in this still life painting. Mine was as follows: life gives you both a flower and a poop each day, you are to choose which one to smell and to look at.
I don’t know any better book to learn from than people around. The lesson Indians taught me was – be happy with what you have coz you really are. Once we were going along some school fence. Small boys were playing cricket on the other side. Then they saw me. They stopped playing and ran to the fence shouting: ‘Happy you, happy you, happy you!’ Who? Am I? It was like waking up realizing that I AM HAPPY, I REALLY DO. Just forgot for a while which lasted for some years.
