Ugly Pictures, Beautiful World, or is it the other way around?

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Beautiful world, ugly pictures. But I think its all ugly and we're just trying to find something nice to look at through a viewfinder and then we show it to an audience in hope that we leave an impression of some sort.
And thats my goal, to leave an impression on people with my body of work, a large dent in the imagination of those stuck to the computer screen, or those unaware of their surroundings.
Ah, our surroundings; ugly, beautiful, strange... I'm drawn to the unknown all the while I'm afraid of it. I think thats why I spontaneously decided to travel alone to Grenada, a little island in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. Why Grenada? Maybe its my overwhelming obsession with James Bond, the secret agent spy in the movie Thunderball, who "penetrates" the Bahamas with his suit and tie. But little did I know my naive self was going to be exposed to a country with no yacht in sight, but replaced with a rising and steady unemployment rate with deep healing scars left over from Hurricane Ivan. It was a clear and very wide eye opener for me. And although I was experiencing culture shock, a little home sickness, and a broken right arm, the people of Grenada were outmost Joyous and welcoming.
I focused my camera on the culture of Grenada, the youth and elders. I spent a total of three weeks, by that time I had made friends with one of the local cabbies, who took me around the whole country for 120 american dollars. At the end of my Journey I was convinced that I wanted to live in Grenada. But as always life turns a 360 on you and all you have left are the negatives of an old you, starring through a lens of an old camera that promises a glimpse of what I thought was the best time of my life but instead an urge to see more, and travel further down the rabbit hole.
