The Strike “Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.” – Benjamin Disrae

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos

I love to travel and I love to photograph. I travel on my own or with people I meet along the way. My camera is my third eye. It captures the things I see and don't want to forget. The things I want to share visually with others and keep for myself as a permanent reminder of other worlds. The need to shoot images of the people, places, things and movement before me forces a cessation in my wondering. The need forces me to shoot and capture what it is i'm so fortunate to see.
My photos should be chosen because they uniquely portray a particular time in Kathmandu, Nepal. They present the images I saw day by day of a country forced into lockdown and from the embedded perspective of a traveller. A nomad intending to pass through but forced to stop. A political strike enforced on a supposed democratic nation. A city usually bustling and alive is bribed, threatened and restrained from daily existence. At any given time things can change and places promised in glossy travel brochures aren't quite the bustling tourist vortex expected. Like any good traveller, I take the good with the bad and my photos have captured a time of unrest and stress on people that usually thrive on sales and smiles. My photos should be chosen because they capture the mood of the unrest and its impact on the people of Kathmandu; on the nation of Nepal and lastly, the impact on the passing traveller. The beauty in the moment prevails.
I take photos that document the people I meet and their world that causes me to raise my camera in their direction. I take photos of the things and the colour and the surroundings that catch my hungry eyes.
