My Scholarship entry - Into Northern Canada

Canada | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

I filled my young adult life with extreme out doors sports and if you had asked me ‘who I was’ then, I’d have identified myself as a kayaker, climber and wilderness adventurer. It never occurred to me to label myself through my work. After the death of my husband, I immersed myself in my career and began to refer to myself as a Perfusionist, a job not a passion.
Photography has been passion for me since I made my first box camera in elementary school and it’s since traveled with me throughout the world. It took a while to learn how to use photography as a means to interact with my environment rather than isolate myself from it. This perspective has allowed me to explore and fully present with my camera.
Last year, I dealt with another life change and I made a conscious choice to no longer separate my passions and dreams from my career, to dream big and make my long-term goal a reality.
I’m now working toward a completely new career in the world of media.
When someone asks me ‘who I am’ I’ll no longer answer by deciding between the passions in my life and my career because the answer to be one and the same.
