"Big Daddy" dune, Sossusvlei

“He fashioned hell for the inquisitive”

The struggles of western life, creating a rapid transgression toward the soulless enterprise of the derelict human capacity; escape was needed! Escape, one that would lead down a road beyond the confines of mundane life, headed for perfection of creation itself.

Hellishly hot; sultry and oppressive under the African sun, midday had arrived. Too late for cooler temperatures, either side of twilight, we had decided to climb the dune that is ‘Big Daddy’, amidst the dry, desolate arid landscape of Sossusvlei. An air of angst followed, standing before creation’s mammoth design of sand-intricacy, the feeling soon hypnotised our minds. A feeling beyond any word in the dictionary; any definable characteristic would be left for the mind to metaphysically interpret. Nevertheless, without delay, our miniature bodies (by contrast) gradually accepted the inevitable; we would have to climb!!

Making our ascent, the terrain of God’s creation started to unravel under our feet. For every two steps, we were pulled down four, making every step harder than its predecessors, sliding and slithering as if the entirety of the entity was a house of cards.
Battling the red-coloured, super-heated sand particles, nevertheless, was one thing, the next and most unavoidable being the intense sunshine. Even for so-called ‘winter’, ‘in an oven’ was an understatement, triumphant thoughts; equidistant from success, the debate on whether to continue still existed, ever closer to surrender. Nonetheless, deciding the lesser of two evils was the path to take, we chose to proceed. Each step, filling us with the anticipation of, not only success upon a journey of ‘self-discovery’ ('discovery' being, freedom and autonomy from the fear of failure), but the anticipation of the views at the top of God’s matchless frame of reference.

Having reach the pinnacle, the end, the highest point of the dune, the views of near-endless boundaries of sand and structure filled our eyes with allure. One has to experience and marvel in the magnificence of nature's splendour to appreciate the transcendence that the Earth presents towards its caretakers; one that connects us all to everything else, as we are all bound for the same fate, (to not get too emotional, or philosophical), for “We mortals are but shadows and dust”, amidst a sea of endless desire.
