I'm a South Korean who was born and grown up in Japan, and now studying photojournalism in the United States.
My ancestors came to Japan from Korea and both of my parents are South Korean. So am I. Most of my friends are Japanese, but not me. Since the relationship between two countries has been difficult, I’ve been struggling with my identity. “I’m not Japanese but can’t be a perfect Korean.”
However when I came to the U.S., it was completely changed. Many people have different backgrounds. I’m allowed to be different and realized that my world was small before I came here.
Now my goal is to be a photojournalist, who has a keen point of view.
Another specific goal is that I want to visit North Korea someday. North and South Korea were one same country before the World War, but we have totally different lives now. I have read many books and heard the news about the country. However every country reports it differently, so I want to see the country and people directly with my eyes, and take photos. I will convey the fact with my photos.
Traveling to Oman will be my adventure. If I were chosen, I would try to see the real, and shoot what I feel from touching them.
