Lost in translation

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

These photos are of the lifestyle of a buddhist monk and how travellers take this lifestyle home. The inspiration for these photos was to observe and understand that authentic cultural practices, that are inherited from generation to generation. This inspiration was due to an interest in how inherited cultural practices and consequently lifestyles are being corrupted through western cultural adaptation. The images are a symbolic metaphor to show information can be lost in translation when passing it across different mediums. I went to Northern Thailand to a place outside ?. It was 3 hours outside the city of ?. I ended up in a place called Fang and I stayed in a monastery for a few days to document and observe their way of life. This was an exciting and interesting time for me. I found being of different ethnic origin to the subjects I was studying I felt quite inhibited as they were interested in me so I felt like it took a few days before they got used to my prescence and resuming their normal day to day life. I have been interested in photography from a very young age. I have just completed an MA in communication design but previous to that completed a degree in photography. I have a love for photography and like to apply that to various other mediums. I have just recently got into underwater photography as I am a passionate scuba diver and want to continue to push myself and develop my skills of underwater photography. When first experimenting with underwater photography I was unaware of how different it was to conventional photography but have relished the challenge.
