(2) The day’s catch has already been delivered to Cádiz’s seafood market, which bustles in the morning. The city, located at the tip of a long and narrow isthmus, draws sustenance from the sea as it has for millennia; it is, by some estimates, the longest-inhabited city in Europe.

(4) Despite the city’s celebratory mood on fair day, Andalucía’s economic troubles are all too visible in a nearby canal, where a rowboat rots in the shallows. Andalucía has suffered more than any other Spanish province in the country’s recession, with unemployment reaching record highs.
