My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

This collection of photos is from a solo trip around the north of India, which I decided to undertake after coming to a standstill in my life. I began in Delhi and after my initial shock, having never been in such an overwhelming city before, I managed to buy a ticket out of there on a local bus northward bound.
The smell, the sounds, the traffic, the colour - were all so new to me. The vibrant river of life that is India overwhelmed my senses time and time again. The idea of 'immaculate chaos' rumbled through my head as new experiences and understandings of life inundated my being - just what you deeply desire from travelling.
My initial intention was spend time in Tibetan Buddhist communities to the North, volunteering helping to teach English, editing a journal about Tibetan prisoners, and also to write stories about what I experienced (I was a newspaper journalist at the time). However to my surprise I found myself falling passionately in love with photography, which had always been a love, but now became an obsession. I have since gone on to follow this passion, but never professionally (only sometimes to accompany stories I write). I am a passionate traveler, but honestly I do not get out there as much as I would like, something I really want to remedy.
My dream since childhood has been to become a writer for National Geographic, but when I think back to those childhood dreams, it was the pictures that fascinated me and inspired young my imagination. I have an obsession with detail and emotional perspective and a life long interest in stroytelling (I am currently completing a thesis on this subject). With this opportunity I could bring into my working reality this love of the visual and the story - and create magic for others (and myself) to enjoy.
