My Scholarship entry - Stepping into the Wild

Growing up, it was hard to settle down in one place. Being born in South Africa, it was easy to let my mind wander to the visions of my birth place. My immediate family was always traveling; after leaving Africa, we found ourselves in Canada (first British Columbia and then Alberta) and then the United States and explored tropical islands such as Barbados. My memories of the vast landscapes and unique faces slowly began to blur, leaving a longing to be immersed in the many cultures once more. So, my father bought me a camera. Everywhere I go, my camera follows. Now as a film student at the University of Colorado Denver, I find that my heart calls to be back to the wild, experiencing life on the edge and sharing it with the world. My bones yearn to explore the ends of the earth, which is why I chose film. I want to document everything and everyone, sharing their stories to those who don't know what lies beyond the comfort of their homes. And through these travels, maybe I will find myself back home, where the lion is my ruler and my family awaits with open arms. As long as my camera is by my side, I will always be happy.
