My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Frustrated is the only word I can use to describe how I felt when I landed up in art school. Every day was a struggle, every moment an opportunity to step back. One long day turned into another until the day we had to choose our minors. I chose photography because I wanted to capture moments to enjoy at a later date.
Investing in a SLR (DSLR’s were unheard of in those times), my life turned for the better. I would go clicking around the city, and the anticipation of seeing those images come alive in the darkroom would almost make me giddy with joy.
Graduation came and the camera got to see less sunlight. Passions swung between photography and reading, but working as a graphic designer was a 24/7 job, and over time, the camera remained locked in the cupboard. Until two years ago. That’s when I invested in a DSLR and started enjoying photography anew.
Photography is my tool for self expression. It helps me identify and comprehend my reality and express my interpretation of the world. Contrastingly, with the DSLR, photography has become easier and more challenging. As the costs involved have gone down, taking a ‘wow’ picture has become more challenging. Through the lens, in these pictures I have tried to capture that which will have the power to stop the eye for a moment, a moment which will bring alive the emotions of a time passed. I see myself as someone who has successfully channeled passion to make a career out of a hobby, focusing on my bond with the elements surrounding me, the evolution of my thoughts and expression, and the development of them into visuals. Photography is my tool for helping me challenge the way I view my world.
